Folsom Street in downtown San Francisco is becoming a destination, but it was formerly the site of the Embarcadero Freeway Terminal Separator Structure: a stacked maze of concrete viaducts and ramps. The corridor is now being transformed into a civic boulevard designed for promenading, and Greg served as the project design leader for both the Planning Department and the Municipal Transportation Agency.  

 

Pioneering design features include:

• Conversion from a four-lane, one-way street into a two-lane, two-way street

• Extra-wide sidewalks with pedestrian street lighting, a double row of street trees for strolling, and ample benches for resting

• Protected bikeways in both directions, connecting into the Embarcadero, 2nd Street, Bay Bridge and Transbay Transit Center bikeways

• Exclusive pedestrian and bicycle traffic signal "scramble" phases to enhance safety

• Large corner bulbouts with rain gardens to filter stormwater and reduce crossing distances

• Bus boarding islands to prioritize transit along a new bus route

• Integration of new skyscraper ground floor designs in functionality and aesthetic

 

Construction completes in 2020.
